What Is a Denim Tech Pack? A Pre-Production Guide for Fashion Brands

Moving a denim collection from concept to production requires more than a design sketch. The manufacturer needs clear information about fit, fabric, stitching, trims, wash appearance, measurements and quality expectations. A tech pack brings these decisions together in one working document.

A well-prepared denim tech pack creates a shared language between the brand, design team and manufacturer. It reduces ambiguity during sampling, supports clearer revisions and provides the technical detail needed for evaluation and costing. This is especially important for jeans, denim jackets, skirts, shirts and shorts, where wash and finishing can influence the final look, hand feel and measurements.

Why does a denim tech pack matter?

The result of a denim garment depends on more than the pattern. Fabric weight and stretch, sewing thread, trims, wash direction and the desired effects may all influence fit and appearance. Verbal instructions or scattered reference images rarely explain these relationships with enough precision.

A tech pack helps the manufacturer interpret the design consistently and records the brand's decisions. During sample review, the intended result can therefore be compared with the actual garment using clear criteria.

What should a denim tech pack include?

1. Product description and style code

Assign a unique code to every style. State the product type, season, fit and any colour or wash variants. Replace broad labels such as “women's jeans” with a more precise description, for example “high-rise, straight-leg, five-pocket women's jeans.”

2. Technical drawings

Show front and back views together with pocket shapes, yoke, waistband, seam lines, hem and closure details. Close-up drawings and notes should explain hidden elements or features that require special execution.

3. Fabric specification

If the fabric has been selected, include composition, weight, construction, colour, width and stretch direction where relevant. If selection is still open, describe the intended appearance, weight, hand feel and performance. Clearly identify whether alternative fabrics may be proposed for sampling.

4. Measurement chart and method

Include measurements by size, points of measurement and tolerances. Explain how waist, hip, front and back rise, inseam and leg opening should be measured. For washed denim, state whether target measurements apply before or after washing.

5. Stitching and construction

Specify seam types, stitch density, thread colours, bartack positions, seam finishing and any special construction. Design-defining choices such as contrast thread, twin-needle details or decorative stitching should not rely on reference images alone.

6. Bill of materials

List buttons, rivets, zippers, labels, patches, pocketing and other components. Define colour, size, finish, placement and branding for each item. Where a final choice is pending, mark the component as an alternative subject to approval.

7. Wash and appearance reference

Wash and finishing often define the identity of a denim product. Describe the target shade, contrast, crease areas, local effects and overall hand feel. Because lighting and screens can alter photographs, support image references with a physical reference or approved sample whenever possible.

8. Labelling and packing

Care-label content, size labels, brand-label placement, folding and packing notes can all be included. Requirements vary by brand and market, so they should be clarified before production.

How is a tech pack used during denim sampling?

The first tech pack is a starting point rather than a fixed document. Measurements, pattern, fabric, trims and wash decisions may change after each sample. Every revision should be recorded with a clear date and version number.

Sample comments should be measurable and easy to locate. “Improve the hem” is less useful than “reduce the leg opening by 2 cm in the stated size.” Wash feedback should likewise identify the target shade, effect area and contrast level.

Common mistakes brands should avoid

  • Leaving out either the front or back technical drawing
  • Providing measurements without defining measurement methods
  • Evaluating fabric and wash as unrelated decisions
  • Leaving trim colours or finishes unclear
  • Sharing different revisions under the same file name
  • Using a reference image instead of technical instructions

A short pre-production checklist

  • Is the style code and revision date current?
  • Do drawings show every critical detail?
  • Are fabric and trim requirements clear?
  • Are measurements, methods and tolerances defined?
  • Do the wash brief and references support the same target?
  • Are labelling and packing notes included?
  • Are open decisions clearly marked?
